Let me elaborate...

Over the past week, Q has been sleeping less and less and I've noticed some odd symptoms.

When he does sleep, he wakes up after only 30 minutes to an hour screaming in pain. During and after nursing, he would arch his back and throw his head back and gasp and cough. Sometimes during a feeding, I would hear him gulp funny and then he would pull away and screech. Some evening he would just scream inconsolably and the only way he was comfortable was upright. And, while he doesn't spit up per se, he would always have a little milk come up with each burp.

Tuesday evening while he was screaming with no end in sight and I was on 2 hours of very broken sleep, Donnie called the pedi's after hours cell and she ordered us to come in the next day.

It seems he has infant reflux (GERD). It could be related to a food allergy so I've been ordered to not eat peanuts, eggs, dairy, soy, and wheat/gluten. She also prescribed Zantac because the choking and gasping needs to be resolved because it can lead to life threatening interruptions in breathing.

It's been a long, hard, grueling week on next to no sleep and we are praying that the Zantac will do the trick and bring back our happy, relaxed little baby. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers, we really need it to get through this rough spot.

ahh yes, the breathing, I forgot to mention the loss of breath. I can't breathe either when having one of my attacks.

I know my husband freaks out when it happens to me, I can't even imagine watching a little baby suffer with it. I hope that the zantac brings some relief.

I'll keep you in my thoughts!

It's terrifying and heartbreaking. I've cried so many times over it the past few days because I feel so helpless. I can't imagine how you or he feels...

thank you for your thoughts!!! It really does mean a lot to us.

Do take a look at RES-Q Infant Wedge & Sling - there's advice available from the Pediatric OT Co-inventor too, and it really could help.

I know how you feel, my daughter has the same problem. It's a terrible thing to watch them go through it. I hope that the medication works for you.

I hope the next few days will show a change in Q and that he'll be back to himself soon. Hopefully food allergies will be ruled out too. I'll keep you all in my thoughts. I can only imagine how scary the last couple of days have been.

((hugs)) Jessi... My older child, my daughter Ava (who is almost 3) had severe acid reflux from the day she was born. It was awful, but the treatment for it has come a long way, even since a few years ago when we had to deal with it.

I'm so glad your pedi was so helpful in giving you things to try and prescribing you Zantac right away. A lot of docs like to avoid meds and try other stuff to manage it, and some don't even want to officially diagnose GERD at all without further testing, but this leaves the baby suffering in the meantime, so I am SO glad your doc seems to be helping you out.

With Ava, we started her on Zantac at about 2 weeks old, and she got it twice a day. But for us, her situation went downhill. I hate to drone on in your blog, (or instill unnecessary fear, because I think her situation was pretty crazy and definitely not "the norm"!) I'd love to help and give you any advice I can, so if you want to email me, please feel free to do so. kwhetzel4 AT hotmail DOT com.

Hang in there. It is a rough time, but with the proper treatment you can manage it very well. And Ava grew out of her GERD - it seems like out of the blue - at around 10-11 months. You and little Quinlon will be in my thoughts!

Oh the poor little thing! My friend has GERD but I'm afraid to say I don't know too much about it other than how uncomfortable it makes her feel. :-( I hate to see babies in any type of pain cuz they just don't understand.

I hope your sweet pea feels better soon.

congrats on your baby! i don't know how i came across your site, but wanted to tell you that my daughter had reflux starting when she was one week. the doc put her on zantac and unfortunately it didn't do much good. however, she never appeared to be in pain from it. she has since grown out of it, as i'm sure quin will too--usually around 6 months when they can sit up. anyway, my doc was going to put my girl on reglan. you might want to ask about that if the zantac doesn't work. you could put a towel under his crib mattress to elevate his head a little--i've heard that can really make a difference.

hang in there, girl! i know you're totally overwhelmed. these first weeks are so hard but you are a great mama. you have great love for your baby and all those hormones will even out soon. big hugs!!!
